Quick Start Tips

1. All lab grown or all natural in the same search

2. Same Shape

3. Size range within 0.10 cts (ex 1.00 - 1.10 cts)

4. *You may keep the gem lab the same or use comparable labs

5. Same Color, Clarity and Cut grades

6. Search the image of the diamond for obvious black or white inclusions

7. If you don’t like the image move on to the next diamond

8.If you do like how the diamond appears continue

9. Record selling price

10. Calculate per carat price (selling price / carat weight)

11. Repeat for each seller you want to consider

Repeat the process on a new sheet when you change the type of diamond (lab grown/natural), shape, size range or any color, clarity or cut grade.

Assuming you have only recorded diamonds you like the appearance of, compare the per carat price and select the lowest one.

If you are creating sheets for both lab grown and natural diamonds, take your favorite one from each and compare the per carat price. Decide which makes the most sense for you.

You have found your diamond!

Additional tips:

  • Diamond color grades D -H show well in white and yellow metals
  • Diamond color grades I - L will show less color in yellow metals
  • If you can see the inclusion, so can everyone else

*While you will see the same grading terminology is used by most of the gem labs, each lab sets its own standards. So, as an example, a diamond graded as H, SI1, Excellent by one lab can be quite different from a diamond of the same grade by another lab. You need to see the diamond. Three labs I feel confident in recommending are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL).
